In a small town in New Mexico, a midnight train collides with a pick-up, and Toulouse’s husband Luke is dead. Widowed young by what she thinks is an accident, she finds herself isolated and bewildered in his hometown. But then, in the weeks after his death, questions arise. An ex-boyfriend appears in town—a wound that has never healed. Luke’s employee Lilly wanders into the sheriff’s office, accuses Toulouse of murdering Luke, and states for the record that she and Luke were lovers. Then, a witness to the accident comes forward dangling information about the crash in exchange for money: he saw someone walking away from Luke’s pick-up just as the train collided with it. Fueled by a rageful desire discover the truth about Luke’s death, Toulouse uncovers the town’s underbelly: Border Patrol abuse and small-town corruption, the cunning of real estate developers and water laws, teen drug dealers, and addiction in their wake. In the end, she will she find out that addiction comes in all forms and that the hungers that fuel us can lead to the worst kinds of betrayal, especially of those we love.
