Details

The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) served as a forerunner to World War II, where the liberal and anti-clerical leaders of the Republic of Spain came under attack from within by monarchists and right-wingers (supported by Adolf Hitler's Germany and Mussolini's Italy), and from the left by Josef Stalin's Russia. It began when Francisco Franco led his disaffected troops based in Spanish Morocco to the mainland to depose the Republic while keeping Spain neutral throughout World War II.

William Herrick, then twenty-two years old, fought in that war as a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, until he suffered machine gun wounds during his first year in Spain. His novel, Hermanos, contains terrifying battles, cynicism, and the loss of idealism by volunteers who were exploited and subverted.
